Africa and Australia – A Mining Partnership…

Joining 1000+ delegates at the 2015 Africa Down Under Conference was a great reminder of just how much positive activity the Australian mining industry has put, and continues to put into the African continent. From juniors in Uganda to near-term producers in Burkina Faso, there was much to be learnt from talking to Exploration Managers, CEO’s, COO’s, CFO’s and Company Directors across a wide range of topics over the 3 day conference.

One of the key themes I took from the conference was what I termed ‘the pursuit of collaboration’. Between respective governments of Africa and Australia, industry groups, mining houses, exploration companies, mining suppliers, financiers and educational institutions, there was a clear message that to truly see the African and Australian mining industry grow, thrive and prosper there must be cooperation and collaboration coupled with a long-term perspective from all parties.

This was highlighted in some great Australian success stories including Base Resources Ltd who have built a long-term and self-sustaining agri-business model in Kenya and backed up at the DRC Luncheon where Australian mining companies like MMG and Tiger Resources Ltd shared their local supplier initiatives in the DRC.

Overall, the general sentiment was quite positive even in light of the industry’s global challenges with Graphite coming out on top as the ‘commodity of the conference’ with a good showing also from gold explorers and producers.

There was a lot of interest in Globe’s HR Services and we enjoyed many meetings with key stakeholders (some old, some new) from this market that we have worked in now for near-on a decade.

We are already looking forward to ADU 2016!
