Ambatovy Nickel Cobalt operations in Madagascar (a Sherritt International operation) is currently searching for an experienced PAL Operations Coordinator. In this role the successful person will be responsible for leading various operations related tasks to ensure the continuity of a safe and efficient operation throughout the PAL (Pressure Acid Leach) area. Reporting to the Operations & Planning Superintendent, the PAL Operations Coordinator will provide additional experienced supervision and direction to PAL operations to ensure safe and efficient operation.

The Role

In this role the successful person will be responsible to:

  • Ensure that health, safety and environmental procedures and standards are followed by all operations personnel
  • Ensure all process and safety incidents and near misses are addressed and reported in a timely manner
  • Conduct periodic audits, inspections and reviews as per the Ambatovy safety management system
  • Attend shift handover meeting with supervisors, lead operators and field operators to monitor the quality of the meetings
  • Ensure plant and production priorities, operating strategies and targets are understood by the supervisors and lead operators, ensuring timelines and targets are met
  • Report on any plant issues and delays that impact on achieving production targets and strategies
  • Escalate issues that impact the safety of people and plant, on achieving set production targets or significant delays to production schedules and strategies.
  • Understand and manage plant and production priorities and ensure information is disseminated to the relevant teams, i.e. Maintenance Department, Operations including other operating departments
  • Assist technical and engineering staff in programs for ongoing improvement of plant performance and equipment reliability and cost reduction
  • Provide direction and leadership to the shift supervisors and lead operators to ensure they meet the safety, production and product quality targets as set by the plant management team
  • Ensure shift supervisors and their operations personnel receive the coaching and mentoring to safely and efficiently operate the plant
  • Provide coaching, training and developing of operational personnel. Carry out competency evaluations of operators in the progression program
  • Reporting on shift basis any production and maintenance issues encountered that have impacted safety, environment or achieving production targets. Suggest strategies to eliminate or mitigate any continuing issues and potential threats for the coming shift
  • Reporting on a monthly basis on HS&E KPI progress for the Operations Group (as outlined in the HS&E Responsibilities section)
  • Reporting on a monthly basis on the number of Standard Operating Procedures and Isolation Lists reviewed
  • Attend and actively participate in Operations and Maintenance Meetings, as required
  • Attend and participate in the Maintenance Priorities Meeting to provide operational priorities on equipment availability and requirements in regards to maintenance activities
  • Attending design review and risk assessment meetings / workshop, as required, to provide expert / field knowledge and opinions on identified issues

The Requirements

  • Relevant Technical qualifications and experience in a similar plant / industry
  • 10 years operating and supervisory experience in a chemical or metallurgical plant
  • Preferred experience within PAL or Sulphuric Acid Leach Plant
  • Strong understanding and commitment to Environment, Health and Safety systems and practices
  • A diverse operational background with a strong knowledge on the operation of various types of
  • equipment and processes
  • Demonstrated record of training and developing local nationals to assume positions of greater
  • responsibility in the organization
  • Experienced in writing and reviewing procedures and policies
  • Mobility, fitness and ability to work effectively in a multi-disciplined team
  • Bilingual: Fluency in English and French is highly advantageous
