Ontario Mining Excels
Jaime Alvarez (Regional Manager the Americas) and myself recently returned from a trip through Sudbury, Kirkland Lake and Timmins visiting some of our underground mine and mining service partners.
It was a great experience and highlighted the outstanding work that Northern Ontario mining companies are doing in such difficult conditions.
Our first site visit included a tour underground to meet the operators of the drilling, loading and crushing areas of the mine which was followed with a tour of the gold mill and zinc/copper concentrator. I was very impressed by the level of safety which has resulted in an excellent record and various awards.
We spent a lot of time with Management and talked through many of the hiring issues that face Ontario mines. Amongst others, this included the need to source exclusively from within Canada due to prohibitive costs of foreign talent, the cold Northern Ontario winters and the need to live local (vs FIFO).
The positives however are that the towns and cities around the mines hold more than adequate social and civil infrastructure, summer time is beautiful and outdoor lifestyle is great for families. There is also a strong community feel and support for one another is important.
I am very privileged to have spent the week touring and it was a great opportunity to meet future and present partners. The Northern Ontario hospitality was overwhelmingly positive and I can’t wait to get back again.
